Subject: The writing on the reverse says something to the effect that "the first in their class has passed the examination," referring to the annual Imperial examinations 科挙 in China (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_examination) where scholars who passed the test were raised to official rank in government. This dish was likely a gift to the new official, the design depicting them departing for their first official duty.
