Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Jar has a replacement fitted wooden lid. Some light wear to painted design. Some staining inside jar.
Subject: One side is decorated with designs of women sitting in a house around a brazier, with a garden in the background together with a stone lantern. The other panel is decorated with designs of men, officials and samurai, sitting outside under a cherry tree (sakura) with a banner with the Shimazu crest (a symbol of Satsuma pottery) hanging nearby. The sides are decorated with detailed rectangular panels of various paintings of flowers, plants, and auspicious objects.
