Age: 20th C. (1900s)
Origin/Maker: Banko ware, Japan. Maker's marks on base, one is the generic 萬古 Banko mark, the other is 洞永 Toei, for 洞永 人見洞永 Toei Hitomi. Born in 1891 to a farmer in Kitagawara-cho, Yokkaichi City. He studied under Izo Kitamura, a master of potter's wheel at the time. In 1912, he arrived in Kyoto and learned the techniques of Kyoto ware from Goro Asami. In 1919, he built an independent kiln in Kisa and was active in producing various types of pottery. He exhibited his work at the Yokkaichi Exposition in 1932 and received a bronze medal.After the war, he worked at the Ceramics Research Institute, and in 1951, the Institute presented a pair of vases made by Tonaga's works to the Emperor and Empress. . He also painted, but his specialty was the potter's wheel. There are many pots he ground that Higashi Nishikido and others painted on them.

Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Original to manufacture crack to base, and hairline crack on underside of lid. Some light surface wear.
