Origin/Maker: Satsuma ware, Kyoto, Japan. Marked Dai Nippon Kitei Sei (大日本亀亭製), attributed to the artist Wake Kitei. Similar to relief decorated wares by Makuzu Kozan and Kinkozan.
[ 4th Generation Wakekitei]
A potter representing Kyoto ware in the Meiji period. Wakeya is descended from Heibei Kameya, who opened a kiln in Gojozaka , Kyoto in 1748 , and named himself Kamitei after Heibei 3rd (? - 1807) . Heikichi Wake (? - 1822) from Bizen ( Okayama Prefecture ) became the 2nd generation Kameitei, and the 4th generation Kameya Kameya Heikichiro was born in Kyoto as the eldest son of the 3rd generation Kameya Heikichiro. His childhood name was Iwamatsu. In 1862 , he inherited the family estate and called himself Kameya Heikichi. In the first year of the Meiji era, he took Wake as his real surname and changed it to Wake Heikichi, but he is called Wake Kamitei along with the name of Kamitei. In 1873 , he became a purveyor of the Kyoto Prefectural Government's industrial sector, and after that he participated in domestic expositions and exhibitions, including the Philadelphia World 's Fair in 1879 and the Paris World 's Fair. Won multiple awards at the Sydney World Exposition.
