Type: Tall Vase
Material: Ceramic Pottery
Age: Meiji Period (1868 - 1912)
Origin/Maker: Makuzu Kozan I 宮川香山, in the style of Satsuma ware. Made in Yokohama, Japan. Unmarked, but Makuzu's early works were in the style of Satsuma ware and often unmarked. This vase contains many of his common design features (for example, the sculpted decorations in relief of peaches and karako boys holding ShiShimai masks and drums, the patterns around the base, middle, and top of the vase, the raised moriage designs, the form of the foot and heavy potting, and his vivid glazes).
Size: 15 3/4" tall (40 cm)
Weight: 3 lb 6.9 oz (1555 g)
Provenance: Pasadena antique mall, Los Angeles CA
Collected: 2016
Condition: Item is used in fair condition commensurate with age, see photos. Middle of vase appears to be repaired. Vertical hairline cracks to top of vase. Some of vase is covered with clear wax drips (vase was presumably used as a candle stand, owing to its unusual shape). Some wear to painted design.
Subject: Decorated with Satsuma style designs of garden flowers around stones, butterflies, various patterns, and raised designs of peaches and karako boys with drums and with ShiShiMai lion dance masks.
