Type: Sweets Bowl
Material: Ceramic Pottery
Age: 1839 - 1891
Origin/Maker: Kiyomizu ware, Kyoto, Japan. In the style of Ogata Kenzan, and similar to works by Kiyomizu Rokubei and with a similar mark, except that Rokubei used a six sided mark (Roku = 6). This maker's mark is inside a 7-sided polygon (heptagon), the mark of Kiyomizu Shichibei (Shichi = 7). Possible collector's/catalogue mark on base, along with the kanji 上つス (Uetsu su; Superior). The wikpedia article about Kiyomizu Rokubei (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiyomizu_Rokubei) says this about his son, Kiyomizu Shichibei:
Rather than inheriting the family headship, Rokubei II's eldest son, Takejirō, was the progenitor in 1839 of a new family branch as Kiyomizu Shichibei[78] (清水七兵衛).[79] The reason is unclear, but apocryphally relates to the fact that he was a heavy drinker and not permitted by his father to use the Rokubei name.[80] Lifestyle aside, Shichibei apparently inherited the family style and technique, with his works reputedly being easily mistakable for those of his father.[81] He was succeeded by his eldest son, also Takejirō (竹次郎), who took the title Kiyomizu Shichibei II.[82] The Shichibei potters used a mark based on that of the Rokubeis: the character sei (清) surrounded by a double heptagon.[83]
