Large Awata Satsuma Vase
SOLD...
Type: Large Vase
Material: Stoneware Ceramic Pottery (not porcelain; Satsuma wares are not made from porcelain).
Age: Late Meiji Period (early 20th Century, early 1900s).
Origin/Maker: Japanese, Kyoto Satsuma (Kyo-Satsuma, Awata Satsuma), unmarked. Possibly by Kinkozan. The raised sculpted decorations of the man are similar to decorations by Kinkozan and Makuzu Kozan.
Size: 17" tall (43.18 cm)
Weight: 7 lb 0.8 oz (3.175 kg)
Provenance: San Diego, CA antique mall.
Collected: Fall 2020.
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age. Some chips to the sculpted right handle, possibly original to manufacture (the chipped portions are painted over). Some chips to the foot of the vase. No cracks. Some staining to the base of the vase. Surface craquelure, as is normal for Satsuma wares.
Subject: Raised high relief sculpted and painted designs of a man holding a long scroll or piece of cloth, while standing above the waves, with tree branches with red leaves (or possibly gourd vines) and a castle in the background. The man is possibly a Sennin (Immortal) or Ryūjin (Dragon King of the Sea). Raised moriage designs in various patterns, most notably circular mon (family crests) in the shape of chrysanthemum flowers, bamboo stalks, and paulownia flowers and leaves. Sculpted handles on each side. Very unusually detailed designs, similar to works by Kinkozan and Makuzu Kozan.
