Origin/Maker: Japan. Unsigned.
Size: 7 1/4" tall (18.415 cm)
Weight: 1 lb 11.4 oz (777 g)
Provenance:
Present: Ryan Snooks collection of Japanese & Asian Decorative Art
Previous: Private Collection
Collected: Yokosuka, Japan antique store (since closed) 31 JAN 2021
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. No cracks or chips. Some light surface wear.
Subject: A double glazed vase with decorative finial handles, with the design on both sides of a Japanese mermaid, the Ningyo, in relief. The Ningyo is a yokai very different from Western mermaids, more fish or lizard than person, and generally monstrous in appearance. Here it has something of a naturalistic appearance (a style possibly encouraged by the scientific tendencies of the Meiji Period, similar to England's Victorian Period), not unlike a monitor lizard, but in keeping with some depictions of ningyo (see photos)
