"Netsuke" by Neil K. Davey (one of my two recommended Netsuke books) says the following about Bazan:
馬山 BAZAN (died 1897)
A fine artist who worked entirely in wood, his one fault perhaps being limited subject matter. His most popular subject was the rotten pear, showing imperfections, such as insect-eaten holes. The skin of these fruit is generally shown with ukibori pimples and the signature is also raised, the surrounding wood giving the appearance of having been impressed. The present two examples are typical of the style. The second of his models is the fox seated on an old straw hat while a captured rat lies beneath, forming the himotoshi.
