Origin/Maker: Mashiko, Japan, unmarked but several experts have attributed them to Hamada Shoji 濱田 庄司 (1894 - 1978). Hamada Shoji is probably the most famous Japanese potter, having a major influence on 20th C. studio pottery, he established the town of Mashiko as a major pottery center, and he was one of the founders of the Mingei movement (together with Kawai Kanjiro and Yanagi Soetsu). In 1955 he was designated a Living National Treasure, the first person to be designated as such for crafts.
Size: Sugarcane bowl measures 5" diameter (12.7 cm), three circle bowl measures 5 1/8" diameter (13 cm)
Weight: Sugarcane bowl weighs 7.9 oz (223 g), three circle bowl weighs 10.5 (299 g)
Provenance: Purchased from Ventura CA antique and consignment store

Condition: Items is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. The sugarcane bowl has two small chips along the top edge.
Subject: One bowl is decorated with his famous broken sugarcane design (sometimes called a grass design), the other with a three circle design that often accompanies the sugar cane pattern.
