Origin/Maker: Similar Maria Kannon examples are typically Hirado ware, and this has some of the same features, but given that it is pottery (not porcelain) and has a yellowish glaze I think it's something else from the same area, maybe Satsuma ware. Japan. Unsigned.

Subject: Statue of Maria Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy Quanyin (Kannon, Kwannon, Kwanyin) holding a child. Similar statues, typically Hirado ware or Chinese Blanc de Chine, were used by early Christians in Japan (Kakure Kirishitan, or Hidden Christian) as a way of secretly worshipping the Virgin Mary while maintaining the semblance of practicing Buddhism.
