Type: Vase
Material: Ceramic Pottery
Age: Meiji Period (1868 - 1912)

Size: 7 1/4" tall (18.415 cm)
Weight: 1 lb 11.3 oz (773 g)
Provenance: Ventura CA antique store
Collected: 28JAN2023
Condition: Item is used in fair condition commensurate with age, see photos. One original to manufacture hairline crack to base. Some damage to design on fruit panel, most notably that the large cherry (or plum?) is missing a lot of enamel, but there is some minor enamel losses to some of the other fruits as well (the loquats, the basket, and some leaves all show some losses). Some light wear to painted design on the bamboo panel.
Subject: Decorated with extensive moriage enamel decorated designs and an unusually bright and cheerful color pallet. One panel has thick raised designs of fruit (plums (ume), peaches (momo), cherries (sakura), loquat (biwa)) in a woven basket and without. and blue white and pink hydrangea flowers (ajisai) in a vase. The other panel has 5 people in a bamboo grove, 3 sages and 2 attendants (possibly a reference to the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove). One attendant is filling a teapot in the river, one sage is playing the koto (Japanese harp), another sage is holding a cane, and nearby one attendant is a dandelion flower.
