See also:
Type: Inro
Material: Lacquer on wood
Age: Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) or older
Origin/Maker: Japan, presumably from Kamakura or nearby.
Size: 2 7/16" tall, 2 1/4" wide, 3/4" thick
Weight: 0.6 oz (16 g)
Provenance:
Collected: Pasadena CA antique store 11 JUN 2023
Condition: Item is used in fair condition commensurate with age, see photos. Inside of one section is missing part of the wood sleeve. Some lacquer to the wood and lacquer design.
Subject: One side of the inro depicts the Kamakura Big Buddha (Daibutsu) of Kotoku-in. The other side depicts a temple roof and the sun (or moon) amid stylized clouds, possibly a scene from Hasedera (or one of the many other nearby temples). The unusual gold painted designs on bare wood are in keeping with the temple motif, resembling decorations seen on wood at temples rather than the usual style of inro decoration. Presumably this was a souvenir of a visit to Kamakura.
