Origin/Maker: Hokei 宝桂, Tokyo (Edo) School, Japan, Signed 宝桂. Hokei 宝桂 was a student of Matsuki Hokei, the famous worker of tsuishu (carved red lacquer).

Collected: eBay 22 OCT 2016. Previously sold as part of Lot 249 (Group Japanese carved wood accessorites) from Millea Bros Ltd on 4 OCT 2016.
Condition: Item is used in fair condition commensurate with age, see photos. One age crack on wheel, two on base of rod, and one chip of wood missing from man's right leg (possibly original to manufacture)
Subject: Presumably a wheel maker, or possibly a man holding a wheel axel while lamenting his broken cart.
