佐藤正義 SATO MASAYOSHI 1819-1865 A prolific artist who worked mainly in wood but sometimes in ivory and whose work is unmistak- able. His favourite subject was the shishi, shown as No. 613. This example is finer than most but incor- porates all the well known attributes of the artist: the rounded body with a hunched back, the pierced ball beneath the front paws, the fine hairwork, the carefully carved paws and the strongly engraved signature in a rectangular reserve which is some- times carved in the round to be utilised as the himotoshi. The signature is deeply engraved in a rectangular reserve.
613 AN EBONY SHISHI, Seated hunched over an openwork foliate ball with a loose ball inside, it holds the ball with one paw while the others rest at the back, the hairwork is rather worn on the back, the himotoshi is formed by a gap in the tail beneath, signed Masayoshi (99)
