Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Origin/Maker: Early Satsuma style ware by Makuzu Kozan, Yokohama, Japan. Unsigned, as was much of his early Satsuma style pieces. I recently sold a similarly decorated Makuzu teapot with vibrant raised Satsuma style enamel designs, but with designs of fruit and vegetables.
Size: Each 12" tall (31 cm)
Weight: Vase with snake and frogs weighs 2 lbs 11 oz (1216 g), the other vase with only insects weighs 2 lbs 11.5 oz (1234 g), together they weigh 5 lbs 6.4 oz (2449 g)

Condition: Items are used in fair condition commensurate with age, see photos. Both vases have a small chip to the upper rim. Surface wear to painted designs (particularly gold painted designs).
Subject: Two vases of cylindrical fluted form with trumpet neck and foot, decorated with gilt roundels containing various flowers, flanked by depiction of insects (mushi). One vase has butteflies, fireflies, beetles, a grasshopper, wasps, cicada and dragonflies. The other has butterflies, beetles, fireflies, a praying mantis, a spider, crickets, a katydid, wasps, frogs, and a snake (animals like snakes and frogs were also considered mushi; basically creepy crawlies)
