Kinkozan Butterflies Cup & Saucer

Type: Cup & Saucer
Material: Stoneware Ceramic Pottery (not porcelain; Satsuma wares are not made from porcelain).
Age: Late Meiji Period (early 20th Century, early 1900s).
Origin/Maker: Japanese, Kyoto Satsuma (Kyo-Satsuma), marked Kinkozan in red paint. Kinkozan made Kyo-Satsuma wares in several distinct styles, including this Ko-Kiyomizu inspired Awata Satsuma style. In this style of wares they usually signed in red or gold somewhere on the side of the piece instead of on the bottom. They also made Art Deco and Studio Porcelain inspired pieces, and highly detailed Kagoshima Satsuma styled pieces.
Size: Cup measures 2 1/4" tall, saucer measures 4 7/8" in diameter
Weight: Cup weighs 3 oz, saucer weighs 3.5 oz, together they weigh 6.4 oz
Provenance: Virginia antique store.
Collected: Fall 2020.
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age. No cracks or chips. Some staining to the ceramic on the saucer. Surface craquelure, as is normal for Satsuma wares.
Subject: Painted butterflies (18 on the saucer, 14 on the cup). Handles in the shape of bamboo stalks.
