Origin/Maker: Makuzu Kozan II 二代 宮川香山 (二代 真葛香山, Yokohama, Japan. Maker's mark on base, and multiple marks on wooden box (tomobako). Tomobako is marked on the top of the box lid, the underside of the lid, the bottom inside of the box, and the bottom of the box (not counting the labels from the antique store)

Son of Chohei, brother of the 1st generation Makuzu Kozan, he often assisted his uncle in Yokohama making ceramics. After the 1st generation Kozan died in 1916, he was named 2nd generation Kozan. Inheriting his style from his uncle, he primarily produced sculptured vases, sculptured figurines and other works, often incorporating birds and flowers. More so than his predecessor, he based his work on scientific research into glazes, which allowed him to develop innovative new works that solidified the reputation of Makuzu-ware.

Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Hairline cracks to base, but holds water with no leaks. Some light surface wear.
Subject: Rare flambe glazed porcelain tea bowl (chawan) by Makuzu Kozan II. The red flambe glaze pooled in the bowl resulting in a blue glaze in the middle.
