Type: Teapot (Kyusu)
Material: Ceramic Pottery
Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912), similar example dated to 1877
Origin/Maker: Early Satsuma style ware by Makuzu Kozan, Yokohama, Japan (possibly from when he was still in Kyoto). Unsigned, as was much of his early Satsuma style pieces. Very similarly decorated, unsigned, lidded bowl, Item #7, described as "Sweets Dish with Grasses and Flowers Design in Overglaze", dated to 1877 in the book "Miyagawa Kozan and the World of Makuzu Ware" from the October 28 - December 24, 2001 exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art. Note in particular the same watermelon and grapes designs, the similar gold "cloud" patterns (with small and large dots in a similar zig-zag pattern), and the similarly sculptured handle and leaves. Compare the enamel decorations also to some of my other signed and unsigned Makuzu Kozan Satsuma-style items. Item #6 from the same book, "Gourd-shaped Teapot with White Glaze" is a similarly unsigned, sculptural teapot, except without the enamel decorations.
Size: 5 1/4" diameter (13.335 cm), 4 1/2" tall (11.43 cm), 7 3/8" long (from end of handle to end of spout; 18.732 cm)
Weight: 13.9 oz (394 g)
Provenance:
Present: Ryan Snooks collection of Japanese & Asian Decorative Art
Previous: Private Collection from PA
Collected: PA auction 17 DEC 2023. At least three other marked Makuzu Kozan pieces were sold in this auction (besides this unsigned Satsuma style teapot with fruits, there was a Ninsei/Gosu blue Satsuma-style large bowl with flowers, a mostly unglazed statue of Daruma, and a celadon incense burner), but only one was identified as such in the description (a celadon incense burner; incidentally the only one of the bunch I didn't buy).
Condition: Item is used in fair condition commensurate with age, see photos. Some chips to the enamel designs of the horsetails, with gold paint apparently added to cover the damage. The base of the lid and where it sits on the teapot have some chips and rough spots, and it appears damage was also covered using gold paint. Some light surface wear.
Subject: Teapot with raised enamel decorations of fruits (mostly in pairs: watermelons, grapes, pomegranates, persimmons, cucumber, plums, peaches, loquats), vegetables (corn, green onion, horsetails), and flowers (peach, lotus, peony, cherry blossom), with the spout, handle, and lid finial decorated with sculpted grape leaves and vines.
