Antique Japanese Silk Kabuki Stage Uchikake KIMONO Chrysanthemum Flowers Japan
Sold...
Type: Uchikake Kimono, likely for the stage (Kabuki theater)
Material: Silk, gold and silver wrapped threads
Age: Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) or newer.
Origin/Maker: Marked "3 Hagiwara", presumably the owner.
Size: 74" long. 56" wide at bottom. 52" wide from end of sleeve to end of sleeve. Each sleeve measures 22" wide and 12.5" tall.
Weight: About 10 lbs
Provenance: Rummage sale at the Seattle Japanese Cultural & Community Center
Collected: August 2018
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Some worn spots, especially along the shoulders.
Subject: Extraordinarily magnificent museum quality handmade kimono, extravagantly decorated with raised heavily embroidered designs of various chrysanthemum (kiku) flowers in a garden, with gold and silver wrapped threads used extensively. Possibly a wedding kimono, but given it's over the top decorations it's more likely a stage costume Uchikake (worn over the kimono, like a jacket), likely from a Kabuki theatrical production (or maybe Noh theater, but less likely) or maybe from the opera Madame Chrysanthème.
