Size: 5 3/4" tall (to top of lid)
Weight: 1 lb 13.5 oz (836 g)
Provenance:
Collected: Kamakura antique store "Iris" 21 AUG 2023. Note that Rosanjin opened a kiln in the Yamasaki neighborhood of Kamakura in 1926. Also note that the nearby Kamakura Kichichoan Museum has a floor dedicated to Rosanjin.
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Some small chips to end of spout. Teapot has some staining under spout (from tea drips?). Fish handle has a tiny chip to the top of the head and a small chip to the top of the tail. Lid has three original to manufacture cracks around outside rim of lid.
Subject: In a Shino style (Rosanjin highly praised Shino as pure Japanese pottery, and it was one of his specialties), with seigaiha wave pattern, with an unusual diamond shaped spout opening, a sculpted fish shaped lid handle (Rosanjin used similar fish designs for dishes), leaf shaped handle loops (this leaf pattern was also frequently used by him, especially with plates), and a black glazed section on the lid which initially appears to be a lacquer repair but is another of his design motifs (similar to kakiwake decorations employed by Miura Kenya (Ogata Kenzan VI) and Makuzu Kozan in their Ogata Kenzan style pottery). Note the white glaze drips down the side of the teapot, and the chatter marks along the sides and bottom of the teapot (a feature of some of his bowls).
